According the Daily News, Pedro Martinez will not sign a contract based on mostly incentives. Why should any team take a big, guaranteed risk on Pedro. I mean, yes, he was great at bringing baseball excitement back to the Mets after his great days in Boston, but baseball contracts are what have you done for me lately. He had an over 5 ERA last year and he is just getting older. Pedro, we understand that you have made a lot of money, if you don’t want to play just retire. Manny, realize no one is going to give you a long term contract, and that is 100% your fault. Act like a man and you get treated like you. Go out before people forget those great days that you guys had together!!!!

Anthony DiComo at Mets.com writes about the Mets being close to getting Livan Hernandez:
NEW YORK — The chase for Johan Santana may remain stalled, but the chase for starting pitching assuredly isn’t. According to a report Friday in the Rocky Mountain News, the Mets are “close” to a deal for free-agent starter Livan Hernandez, who could provide a boost for their rotation.
Hernandez, 32, finished 11-11 for the Diamondbacks last season, posting a 4.93 ERA. While he’s the half-brother of current Mets starter Orlando Hernandez, he shares none of El Duque’s durability issues. And that’s precisely where his value lies.
Over the past decade, Hernandez has eclipsed 200 innings nine times — and in the one season he didn’t, he finished just one-third of an inning shy. With 43 career complete games to his credit, he’s a throwback to an era when bullpens were used, not abused.
Well, this is a good player to have – someone with a lot of experience, maybe will help us down the stretch. He’s a solid pitcher and would most likely be our number 5starter if he ends up signing with us.
Sorry for the lack of updates lately, I’ll be back on track soon.

At Rotoworld.com they write about how the Mets got Matt Wise:
Mets signed RHP Matt Wise, who had been with the Brewers, to a one-year contract.
The Brewers liked Guillermo Mota better, so they traded for him last month and then non-tendered Wise last week. Our guess is that Wise is the more effective pitcher next season, and the Mets are probably getting him for less than half the $3.2 million Mota was due to make. He’ll work in middle relief.
I think this is a great signing for the Mets, who have been looking for a good middle reliever to fill in for our all-star reliever Guillermo Mota.
It is a great signing by Omar, but I hope that he realizes we need to make a good trade this offseason.

The Mets are likely to non-tender Johnny Estrada, according to the New York Daily News.
New York acquired Estrada last month, but then made him expendable with the trade for Brian Schneider. With Washington out of the picture after signing Paul Lo Duca, Estrada’s chances to land another starting gig are drying up.

Well, I can’t say I’m surprised, as it seems pretty clear Schneider is going to be our starting catcher, but I still wish that Estrada could come to better use, but to tell you the truth, we don’t need him. I would rather have Castro as a backup than him, and even though I am not so crazy about Schneider, he is a great defensive player so I can see the motive for acquiring him.
Maybe Johnny will aid the Mets in trading for Johan Santana…
